CEO Emma Mahy's 2021 highlights

What a year it’s been! As Christmas rapidly approaches, I always try to find the time to reflect back on the year before planning for the next.

It really has been the best year yet for IoT Solutions Group. So many exciting things have happened over the past 12 months: we’ve forged valuable new partnerships, gained additional investment, more than doubled the size of our team and achieved some fantastic media coverage.

However, one event stands out more than anything else and will for years to come – helping save the lives of two Sutton residents with our assisted living solution. It was a hugely emotional experience that touched every team member; realising that we had produced technology that really was being used for good was humbling.

Solution roll-outs

Back at the beginning of the year, we announced the roll-out of our adult social care solution with The South London Partnership boroughs as part of the InnOvaTe project.

Following months of consultation and product development with Adult Social Care experts, we initially deployed 200 in-home sensors across Sutton Housing Partnership [SHP] properties to unobtrusively monitor the wellbeing and improve the safety of vulnerable independent people [VIPs]. The device’s design meant that they could be simply posted through letterboxes, ensuring social distancing was maintained, a key requirement of the ASC team.

Following the success of this project, we have since launched similar schemes with Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole [BCP], Dorset, Suffolk and other Councils. Numbers are escalating, and our Client numbers are growing as word spreads – technology, even in its simplest form, can make life-changing differences – something we are very proud of.

As many SMEs can testament, the progression from pilots to fully-fledged service contracts is immense – we are actually delivering devices and solutions that have been tried and tested in the field. The value of IoT is no longer a myth; it’s a fact, and we’ve proven that! We’ve won service contracts to roll out our Legionella risk mitigation smart parking and waste management solutions and have worked on several bespoke projects. As a result, we are now working with an ever-expanding number of local authorities across the UK.

Award highs

As a company, we were shortlisted for a string of top industry awards this year to recognise the outstanding results and growth we’ve achieved.

Earlier in the year, we were named as finalists in the ‘IoT Award’ category at the Connected Britain Awards, placing us alongside Norfolk County Council, O2 Smart Metering, Pangea Connected and Vodafone. IoTSG also made the shortlist for the ‘Tech Company of the Year [Under £5m]’ prize at the Tech South West Awards, which celebrates the region’s very best tech achievements.

Other award highlights include making the shortlist in the ‘HealthTech Innovation of the Year’ category at the Digital Leaders 100 Awards, a nationwide event that focuses on securing the UK’s digital transformation.

Having been proud winners of a Digital Catapult Platinum Award in 2019 (which recognises disruptive companies in the market with huge growth potential), I was also absolutely thrilled to join the judging panel for the Digital Catapult Awards this year. My initial reaction when I was asked was, “Me? Really?!” – this was a huge personal recognition.

Press coverage

We have been shocked by the fantastic media coverage received locally, nationally, and even internationally. We have been able to share our teams’ expertise through thought leadership pieces for top industry-specific publications like Information Age, IT Pro, LocalGov.co.uk, and interviews for media outlets such as Business Matters, London Loves Tech, and Technology Reseller.

I was pushed way out of my comfort zone to appear in front of the camera on several occasions! Firstly on BBC South Today to talk about the roll-out of our adult social care solution with BCP Council (huge thanks to BCP resident Elaine for allowing the BBC team to interview and film her in her home). And then on London Live to discuss the life-saving outcomes from our work with Sutton Council.

Look to the future now; it’s only just begun…

With so many exciting highlights from the past year, the bar has certainly been set high for 2022. We’re incredibly proud of the collaborative partnerships we’ve forged and built upon with our customers and really value their knowledge and feedback as sector-specific experts.

None of this would have been achievable without the dedication and commitment of every member of the IoTSG team – I am hugely grateful to each and every one of them. Every morning I look forward to the day ahead and love having the opportunity to learn something new.

We continue to face challenges, but I know we have the team’s support in helping us achieve our goals – bring on 2022!

It finally remains for me to say a huge thank you to all of you, to wish you a safe and happy Christmas and a bright New Year.
